Amy Van Fossen

For almost 20 years, Amy VanFossen has been the voice and champion for the citizens of her hometown Gloucester County community where her roots here are deep. Amy was born in 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Virginia when she was one year-old when her father, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, chose to attend the William & Mary School of Business where he graduated in 1976 with an MBA degree. When her dad went to work at VIMS as an accountant, Amy’s family relocated to Gloucester in 1976, the same year that Gloucester County implemented public Kindergarten at Achilles Elementary School which is where Amy began her amazing journey into academics.

She graduated from Gloucester High School in 1989 and did what no other Gloucester student had ever done before. She attended Stanford University.  Stanford was an amazing experience for Amy. She left her mark on campus. With the help and promotion of Coach Denny Green, Coach Tyrone Willingham, and Coach Brian Billick, Amy VanFossen started the varsity cheerleading program at Stanford for football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball.  During her years at Stanford, that cheerleading team traveled all over the country with those 3 varsity sports, including stops in Honolulu and Fort Lauderdale. Thanks to Amy, that program continues today.

Stanford was also an incredible academic experience for Amy.  She graduated with a double major BA in psychology and political science.  Coursework at Stanford allowed Amy to take seminars with the legendary psychologist, Albert Bandura exploring the psychological cause of human aggression. It allowed her to teach elementary school students in East Oakland in exploring education and civil rights and, it allowed her to explore foreign culture and foreign diplomacy by studying in Paris.

After Stanford, Amy moved to New Orleans and attended the Tulane University Law of School where she graduated with not only a Juris Doctorate but also a certification in Sports Law which allowed her to become an NFLPA Certified Contract Advisor.  Now married with three children, Amy remains tirelessly committed to the citizens of Gloucester County. She lives here, her children go to school here, her office is here and she loves spending her days in courtrooms all over Eastern Virginia helping the injured, protecting the criminally charged and assisting families and children navigate the strange and anxious world of Family Law.
